玄珠 carried the shadow of a familiar soul; the first, yet wholly his own.
He shares the same fiery temper and adventurous streak, but there is a softness to him - gentler, mellower in spirit. One moment affectionate, the next full of attitude, just like a cat’s pride tucked inside a hamster’s tiny body. His black coat shimmered under the sunlight which also posed a challenge never before; with his eyes and expressions blending so seamlessly together that they are almost impossible to capture in a photograph. There will always be a special place in my heart for him.
Amber was a sweet and affectionate hamster, but she was not one to be smothered with kisses and cuddles all the time. She enjoyed affection on her own terms and would let you know when she was in the mood for some snuggles. Modelling for pictures was not her favourite pastime, and she would usually squirm and wriggle until she managed to escape. Amber was also prone to getting into mischief when left alone for too long, so it was important to keep a constant eye on her before she disappeared around the corner.
Asahi was named after a famous beer, but more importantly, the name carries the meaning of “sunshine” or, on a more intimate level, “ray of hope.”
After Tommy's passing, I was unable to find a suitable successor for a solid three months. For various reasons, the process eventually came to a standstill. It was only after two futile visits that I finally managed to bring Asahi home.
He was neither my first hamster nor the most talented or cuddly, but he definitely left a huge presence in my life. No words can describe the feeling Asahi gave me during the time we spent together. The best word I can think of is “empathy.”
Tommy had a special affinity with me. We first met when he boarded with us for a staycation. He was an adorable and gentle boy. No matter how much I teased him, he would take treats from my fingers tenderly, always careful not to cause any injury.
Unknowingly, he went from being a regular guest to becoming a permanent member of the household when his owner needed to return to her hometown. I agreed to adopt him without hesitation. It was not something I had expected, but it turned out to be something truly blissful.
开阳, aka Mizar, was named after a star in the constellation Ursa Major.
He was the male keeper from the litter sired by Summer and borne by Autumn.
Mizar had vibrant orangey fur with a lighter dorsal colour than Summer. He took after his mother's active nature, running vigorously on his wheel at night and zooming around the house. Yet he also enjoyed cuddling sessions, happily relaxing in dreamland.
武曲, aka Alcor, was named after a star in the constellation Ursa Major.
She was the female keeper from the litter sired by Summer and borne by Autumn.
Alcor's fur leaned towards the brown spectrum, giving her a beautiful coffee-coloured coat. She had a laid-back personality like her father and could often be found asleep in corners, giving me a dazed look whenever I called upon her.
However, once she was in my hands, she switched to her active side and became just like her mother. She was never content to stay still and enjoy cuddling; instead, she preferred to embark on a quest to scale my wrist.
After a twist of fate and a month of searching for the perfect orange pudding hamster, Summer finally came home with me.
I had high expectations for him to take after Dawn, but he turned out to be at the other end of the spectrum. He had a laid-back personality and was content to fall asleep anywhere. Nonetheless, he was unique in his own way and carved out a place of his own.
His sweet, sleepy face never failed to melt away the worries and frustrations of my day and lull me into his serene world. I accepted him wholeheartedly for who he was—not as a shadow of my most beloved pet, but as himself.
Autumn, the Consort of Summer and Mother of Mizar and Alcor.
The bearer before the Winter Season, wild in nature yet beautiful in her own way.
Her mind was unpredictable; she could be as attention-seeking as she was demanding of affection, yet as ferocious as a warrior at times. No obstacle was too high or too difficult for her, and her spirit never broke, no matter how many times she fell.
Tian Xuan, 天璇, was named after one of the seven stars of the Northern Dipper. The name also carries the meaning of “spinning sky,” which suited him.
He loved climbing onto anything, especially on me which is something I always caved in. However, at times, he could also hibernate like a bear, sleeping so deeply that he was completely oblivious to his surroundings.
He had many adorable poses that were never to be seen again after an accident shortened his life.
A beautiful lady, gifted in many ways and possessing many different forms. She entered my family and my heart when she was no older than a weaned child.
A curious girl in a vast new world, she was curious about everything and afraid of nothing; climbing high and running low. This eventually led to the discovery of her extraordinary climbing talent, which saw her crowned the winner of a competition.
Despite losing her energy in her silver years, she continued to shine with her genuine and jolly expression. She was always a photogenic model, my poster girl.
No matter how much fun she had, she still preferred to snuggle and fall asleep on me.
Dawn, a stolen piece of me.
Yuki—the meaning of “snow” in Japanese.
This lady certainly lived up to her name, with flawless white fur, hardly a grey marking in sight, and a cold temperament. To guests, she was completely different from their idea of a cute, warm and playful hamster.
However, she was icy on the outside but sweet on the inside.
Her favourite activity was nose-bumping!
He was so tame that he allowed me to tease him—rubbing his fur until it became messy and pinching his nose
Furthermore, he was a sleepyhead who loved falling asleep in my palm.
Always remembered as the gentle one...
He was completely different from his brother—an active one who seemed unable to keep still. Other than his territorial behaviour, he was a sweet pet. I loved watching him constantly trying to conquer my hand.
My first pet, a gift from a relative. He was about four months old when he came to me.
A bad-tempered cutie, but a smart guy. Because of his uncanny ability to find his way home on his own, he earned the privilege of roaming freely around the house.
He left peacefully in his sleep.
Forever carved in my heart.
The proud mother of Baby & GG. This lady was also a gift from my relative, and she was pregnant when she came to me. It was an amazing experience to witness her journey as a busy yet caring mother.
She left me while I was overseas, and I was heartbroken that I could not be with her during the final part of her life.
